College Profile:
Darton College

An Entire World of Knowledge

Students who want to leave behind traffic jams, smog, high rent, and $10 movie tickets while still experiencing a full college life should consider looking at Darton College in Southwest Georgia.

Different types, sizes, and styles of colleges are designed to do some types of things better than others. What they do at Darton is get students off to a solid start to either a college degree or a good career.

Darton College is a two-year college in the University System of Georgia that offers a broad range of transfer programs, career degrees, and certificate programs. Put simply, their mission is teaching, and they do it well. At Darton College, students find a faculty committed to academic excellence, flexible class scheduling, and the latest instructional technology–all at an affordable price.

Darton offers its nearly 4,500 students the total college experience, including quality academic, extracurricular, and student service programs. With 56 two-year transfer degrees, 21 two-year career degree programs, and 37 certificate programs, students have options that fit their individual needs.

Transfer students are well prepared for a four-year college or university, and career program graduates who take licensing exams have among the highest pass-rates in the state and, in most cases, 100 percent employment upon graduation.

Academics for All Skill Levels

Students who can use some help in preparing for the rigors of college academics will find a friend at Darton College. Darton offers an exceptional range of helpful programs to aid students in getting up to college speed including the Learning Support Division and the Student Success, Minority Advising, and Tutoring Programs.

For a more rigorously challenging academic program, the Honors Program provides transferable core-curriculum courses for highly motivated students who value participatory learning, scholarly exchange, and innovative instruction. Students are educated about western cultural heritage, current world affairs, and they gain exposure to controversial issues encountered in modern society. The Honors Program provides students with opportunities for professional and personal development that will assist with their career goals and enhance their personal life. The Honors Program also exposes and requires students to be active in the community and participate in cultural enrichment activities.

Curriculum: Geared for Easy Transfer

One-half of Darton's students transfer to four-year institutions to complete their degree. The transfer curriculum is consistent with the content of the University System of Georgia's core curriculum, assuring easy transfer. And the small classes and personal attention at Darton pay off. Research has found that many students transferring to state regional universities actually perform better academically than the native students at those schools.

Center for Nursing and Allied Health Education

Over the last decade, Darton has become South Georgia's Center for Nursing and Allied Health Education, now providing 13 allied health degree programs, including programs in Cardiovascular Technology, Diagnostic Medical Sonography, and Physical Therapist Assistant.

Hot IT Careers

Darton students have the opportunity to train for some of the hottest Information Technology careers. Cisco, Oracle, A+, and Network Support Specialist are just a few of the IT certificates and degrees available at Darton. Thanks to HOPE, certificate programs are free for most Georgia residents.

Faculty: Experienced, Helpful

Darton College's faculty bring a broad range of cultures, interests, and backgrounds into the classroom experience. The average student-to-faculty member ratio is a low 17-1. Professors in every discipline from business to computer science to liberal arts are exceptionally knowledgeable. Yet, the education experience only starts in the classroom–the Darton faculty is also dedicated to developing strong, supportive relationships outside the classroom to help assure our students' success.

Student Success

Some students may need a helping hand in adjusting to college. Through Darton's Learning Support, Student Success, and Minority Advisement programs; the library; and the math, computer, foreign language, reading, and writing laboratories, we can lend assistance that you need to succeed academically.

Faculty and staff serve as your academic advisor. Your advisor will assist you in scheduling your classes each semester and will guide you toward successfully planning to complete your program of study. We can even assist you in your efforts to secure off-campus housing through the Office of the Dean of Students.

Darton welcomes students with disabilities. Our Disability Services Coordinator helps arrange accommodations to serve a wide range of learning and physically disabled students–helping each student reach his or her potential is key.

More than Books and Classrooms

Students are encouraged to participate in a wide variety of campus activities whether you join a club, act in a play, play an instrument in the orchestra, sing in the choir, or become a leader in the Student Government Association, Darton has a place for you.

Nationally Ranked Intercollegiate Athletics

Darton College has one of the largest two-year intercollegiate athletic programs in Georgia. Women compete in basketball, soccer, softball, and swimming, while men field teams in baseball, golf, soccer, and swimming. Opportunities exist not only to play on the state level for championships in Region XVII, but also to compete for national titles through the NJCAA. Darton's 2004-05 men's golf team claimed the NJCAA Division II championship title.

Scholarships are available for all sports based on a combination of athletic and academic ability, coach's evaluation, and previous athletic experience.
