Armstrong Atlantic State University
College Profile
Armstrong Atlantic State University is Savannah's teaching-first university, where professors, teaching in small classes, devote themselves to their ambitious
students to help them acquire the skills and habits of mind to transition confidently
into the professional world.
Historical Location
Armstrong is located on a 268-acre campus—a serene expanse of botanical gardens—that is minutes away from the Tybee Island beaches and the rich history, culture, and eclectic entertainment opportunities found in Savannah, Georgia's first city. A regional hub of higher education, industry, and commerce, the city teems with art galleries, cafes, fountains, historic squares, and colonial mansions lined by an energetic Riverfront District. Savannah also brims with career opportunities, from health care to the creative arts, and from science and engineering to education.
In academic halls across the campus, one of the first things that our more than 7,600 students notice is that they are part of small, welcoming classes that offer abundant opportunities for them to build relationships with one another and get to know their professors on an individual basis. Small classes and personal attention from professors are central to the Armstrong experience. It is what we like to call YOUR Armstrong advantage. We intentionally keep our class sizes small, our professors accessible, and you at the center of attention.
And because professors actually know their students' interests, they help them plug into the Savannah experiences that relate to their field, so that they can accelerate their learning. As a result, students grow into thinkers and learners, and as individuals curious about mastering not only what is required, but also what inspires them.
Academics
Armstrong offers a large variety of academic programs and all the options found in large-scale universities, including a challenging Honors program, nationally recognized athletic programs, and abundant opportunities for students to interact with the local community.
The College of Education, College of Health Professions, College of Liberal Arts, and College of Science and Technology offer more than 100 graduate and undergraduate academic programs taught by professors whose main focus is teaching and who are devoted to helping students master a lifelong habit of critical thinking. Armstrong students may pursue a great variety of academic programs, ranging from fine arts and education, to criminal justice, history and economics, to computer science, chemistry, engineering and mathematics.
As a Regional Health Professions Education Center designated by the Board of Trustees of the University System of Georgia, Armstrong offers unique and highly competitive programs in nursing, health sciences, communication sciences and disorders, medical technology, radiologic sciences and physical therapy. In 2009, the university received approval to begin offering its Doctor of Physical Therapy Degree independently.
Student Life
More than 1,400 students living on campus immerse themselves in the full residential university experience, join any of our more than 80 student organizations, stay fit in our recreation center, join competitive intramural teams, or, as student athletes, join a winning tradition of intercollegiate athletics—our men's and women's tennis teams alone have clinched five national championships in the last few years.
In fall 2010, more than 560 incoming freshmen moved into the new facility, a four-story secure complex with card-access only entrances and elevators offering private and semi-private suites, shared kitchens, and a game room.
In addition to the rich learning opportunities, its beautiful, close-knit campus and its great location in Savannah, Armstrong offers solid opportunities for community outreach and civic engagement. Our students volunteer, intern, and give back to the city, tapping its resources while also contributing their own. Our Initiative for Civic Engagement integrates a bedrock sense of social responsibility into college life, as students connect with the local community through an array of service efforts. Study abroad programs to more than 40 nations and a diverse student population that is representative of more than 80 countries and nearly every state in the country, serve to complement the Armstrong experience.
