College Profile:
Augusta State University
Augusta State University continues to place high priority on the personal attention and academic excellence that has become its trademark. ASU is one of the most diverse units of the University System of Georgia, serving more than 6,600 students from 104 Georgia counties, nearly every state and 60 countries.
Location
Augusta, Georgia—home of the famed Masters Golf Tournament—is a beautiful, historic city, located on the Savannah River adjacent to South Carolina. The second largest city in Georgia offers abundant cultural and recreational opportunities and is within a short drive from two state capitals, coastal beaches, and scenic mountains.
Faculty
ASU has over 200 full-time faculty of which about 70 percent hold doctoral degrees. The 20:1 student to faculty ratio allows professors to know students as individuals, not numbers. And, even as undergraduates, students may perform research with faculty and present their findings at state, regional, and national conferences.
Academics
Hands-on learning is a hallmark of the institution. Many upper level classes involve projects with community agencies where their academic experience has direct impact and benefit to the community. Also, students can perform internships within their major fields, gain experience through Co-Op education, participate in an Honors Program, or study abroad. Combined, ASU's Katherine Reese Pamplin College of Arts and Sciences, James M. Hull College of Business, and College of Education offer about 60 academic programs that lead to associate, bachelor, master, or specialist degrees.
Academic support
Students find the academic resources at ASU they need to help them succeed. Reese Library holds more than 500,000 volumes and provides access to more than 100 databases. Its vast offerings are expanded through access to other University System of Georgia institutional holdings. The Media Center provides a wide range of multimedia equipment that can be used at the center or checked out. Computer labs, e-study areas, and internet cafés provide more than 1,300 computers for student use, and a computer help desk is staffed to assist students with difficulties they may encounter. Students are provided a free email account that they can keep even after becoming alumni. Other academic support includes the Counseling and Testing Center the Writing Center, peer tutoring, the Disabilities Office, Minority Advising Program, Academic Advisement, and the Career Center.
Financial aid
ASU awards about $25 million in aid through grants, scholarships, loans, and campus work opportunities every year. Each incoming freshman is "Fixed for Four," which means the tuition they begin under will not change during their four years at ASU. And about 1,000 people graduate from ASU joining about 30,000 alumni of the institution.
Excellent facilities
The beautiful main campus is graced with ancient oaks and aged magnolias. Historic administrative buildings dating back to the 1800s are enhanced by new technology-rich classroom buildings that opened after 2000 and hold about 90 percent of the academic instruction space, offer modern classrooms and state of the art computer and scientific labs. The Jaguar Student Activities Center offers students a variety of recreational activities, fitness equipment, and a food court. Students may utilize any of the fitness facilities at the Christenberry Field House, located on the 244-acre Wrightsboro Road campus. Anchoring the athletic complex is our 18-hole golf course, Forest Hills Golf Club, on which students can play at discounted rates. The safety of our students is paramount, and ASU Public Safety officers—certified law enforcement officers—provide security for the university facilities on a 24-hour basis. University Village, ASU's student housing located just minutes from the main campus, is a beautifully designed, gated residential complex that boasts a swimming pool, high-speed internet access, and other amenities.
Student Life
Students learn leadership and interpersonal skills through participation in student life. Nearly 80 student organizations appeal to a wide range of interests. On the cultural side, art exhibitions, concerts, theatrical productions, and other programming offer students the opportunity to participate or be part of the audience. Students can also participate in a number of intramural sports, and either be a spectator or participant in NCAA intercollegiate athletics. In Division I, men and women compete in golf; in Division II, ASU fields teams in men's baseball, basketball, and tennis and in women's basketball, cross country, softball, tennis, and volleyball. Coaches emphasize that a mid-size university that can offer more playing time can often be a better choice for athletes hoping to move into professional sports.
