Columbus State University
University in Atlanta, Georgia
Nestled in Georgia's Chattahoochee River Valley, Columbus State University offers comprehensive learning opportunities to more than 8,000 undergraduate and graduate students. With the recent completion of a $100 million capital campaign, CSU has renewed its vision of innovative, engaging learning environments, dedicated service to community and an uncompromising commitment to academic excellence at all levels.
A member of the University System of Georgia, CSU is a public university that offers more than 50 undergraduate programs and more than 35 master's or specialist programs, ranging from art to pre-med.
At Columbus State University, students experience an interactive learning environment where not just the stellar faculty, but also the staff, other students and community partners care about the education process. This learning is not confined to the classroom. Students learn in the field, in the lab, on the stage, with mentors in Fortune 500 boardrooms and in foreign countries. Columbus State students travel to over 40 countries with over 100 different study abroad programs.
Columbus State University considers itself, above all else, a teaching university. Nationally distinguished programs in art, business, education, theatre and music, to name just some of the wonderful programs of study at CSU, bolster our mission with rich learning opportunities. In 2007, CSU's departments of art and theatre moved into a new state-of-the-art complex along the Chattahoochee River, joining CSU's Schwob School of Music nearby to create a downtown fine and performing arts campus -- called CSU RiverPark -- that is unlike anything else in the country. The project is another example of the university's extraordinarily strong community support in the historic city of Columbus, about 100 miles southwest of Atlanta.
Rich learning opportunities – and community experiences – are available through the Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center, the Coca-Cola Space Science Center, the Rankin Arts Center and the RiverCenter, a state-of-the-art performing arts facility. Additional educational opportunities are available in our Honors Program, our heralded Servant Leadership Program, and our study abroad curriculum.
Columbus State University opened its doors in 1958. Three years later, CSU moved to its current main campus, and has grown so dramatically, the university now features three locations: the main campus of 150 beautifully landscaped acres in the middle of Columbus; more than a dozen buildings in the historic district downtown, and in Oxford, England, where CSU is one of only a few American universities with its own house near Oxford University where students can live while taking classes there.
Most classes are still taught on main campus, where improvements are continually being made. One of the campus' jewels is the 96,000-square-foot Center for Commerce and Technology, housing the D. Abbott Turner College of Business, TSYS School of Computer Science and the university's Computer Information & Networking Services department. The Frank G. Lumpkin Jr. Center also is an impressive recent addition to campus. The Lumpkin Center is home to CSU's men's and women's basketball teams, the Department of Physical Education and Leisure Management, and various classes. Campus Recreation is very excited to further meet student fitness, health and recreational needs with the building of a new Student Recreation Center. This $26 million facility will be approximately 100,000 square feet and has an estimated completion date of October 2010. The facility will house a fitness area along with an aquatic center. It will feature two basketball courts, workout area, two aerobic rooms, free weight area, running track, multi-purpose court, two racquetball courts, indoor soccer, volleyball and large event area. The Aquatics Center will have a 25 yard lap pool, leisure pool, therapy pool and sauna. With these new buildings, students have a wide variety of choices for study and comfort.
Student housing on campus is definitely not typical college dormitories. New apartment-style housing is available adjacent to campus, as well as in the middle of exciting downtown Columbus on CSU's RiverPark campus. The floor plans include an option for individual rooms and bathrooms if so desired.
At Columbus State, a student can be a member of over 100 student organizations, with 13 fraternities and sororities, honors group, and even religious groups. Students can also participate in sports from a Division II level, to a club level, and even an intramural sports level.
Columbus State University is dedicated to developing the full potential of its students. A variety of opportunities are provided for students to explore personal, professional, and social interests; to develop leadership capabilities; and to broaden intellectual and cultural dimensions through student activities programs and services consistent with the goals and purposes of the university.
