Emmanuel College
The start of the 2001-2002 academic year marked an exciting new era for Emmanuel College as it welcomed the first coeducational class in its history and largest entering class in 30 years. For 83 years, the college has provided a strong liberal arts and sciences foundation for more than 14,000 students, developing their talents and abilities, providing a challenging and supportive college experience, and encouraging a balance of strong academics, career preparation and personal growth.
A Catholic college founded in 1919 by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, Emmanuels 16-acre campus is located in the heart of the Bostons cultural, medical and educational communities. A stones throw from landmarks such as the Museum of Fine Arts, Fenway Park, Symphony Hall and renowned medical institutions, Emmanuels location gives students access to the ultimate extended classroom. The city provides countless service opportunities, allowing Emmanuel students to become active members of the community.
This fall, Merck & Company, a leading pharmaceutical company, broke ground on the Emmanuel campus for its 11th and largest research facility. This facility, to open in early 2004, will focus on new drug discovery and will provide new educational opportunities for students and faculty through research internships and program initiatives.
Emmanuel offers both a traditional undergraduate liberal arts and sciences program and graduate and professional programs. The college offers a personalized educational experience, with a 15:1 faculty to student ratio and top-notch faculty. Undergraduates can pursue Bachelor of Art and Bachelor of Science degrees and the college offers a wide-range of major and minor programs. Students can also focus on individualized and interdisciplinary major programs. Most departments also offer the opportunity to receive credit for off-campus internships and practica.
Emmanuels Graduate and Professional Programs offer Bachelor degrees in Business Administration, Health Care Administration, Nursing (for RNs), Liberal Arts and Sciences; Master degrees in Management, Education, Human Resource Management; and a Graduate Certificate Program in Human Resource Management. The Emmanuel College Advancement Program (ECAP) allows students to complete some programs at an accelerated rate.
The college is an active member of the Colleges of the Fenway, comprised of six neighboring colleges in Boston — Emmanuel, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Massachusetts College of Art, Simmons College, Wentworth Institute of Technology, and Wheelock College — who have joined in an exciting collaboration to enhance the academic and social life of students and to slow the escalating costs of higher education.
Since Emmanuel is a member of the Colleges of the Fenway, undergraduate students can cross- register for courses at the other five colleges at no additional cost.
Together, the six colleges offer students more than 3000 courses. The consortium also jointly sponsors social events, intramural sports, lectures, plays and concerts. Emmanuel students can take advantage of other resources at these colleges, such as libraries, labs, bookstores and dining halls.
A variety of personalized academic services are available at Emmanuel, including the Academic Advising Program, the Academic Resource Center and the Internship and Career Development Office. These services offer students the support to help balance academics, work and student life, and develop the skills necessary to begin a successful career.
Emmanuel College athletics offer a variety of competitive sports and intramural programs. Varsity sports include mens and womens basketball, mens and womens cross country and indoor track & field, womens soccer, womens tennis, womens volleyball and softball. The college anticipates offering mens soccer and mens volleyball and mens and womens outdoor track & field in 2002-2003.
Emmanuel Colleges nationally-ranked womens basketball team appeared in the NCAA Division III "Final Four in the 2000-2001 season, the first time in NCAA history that a college from Boston made any basketball "Final Four — men or women, NCAA Division I, II or III.
There is a wealth of opportunity to get involved in campus organizations. Academic and social groups include; Admissions Ambassadors, Best Buddies, Black Student Organization (BSO), Student Business Association, College Republicans, Commuter Council, Current Focus (student newspaper), Education Club, Emmanuel College Singers, Epilogue (yearbook), Political Science Club, Peace & Justice Club, Residence Hall Council (RHC), Student Government Association (SGA), Student Life Activities Committee (SLAC) and the Theater Guild.
The college provides its students with all the tools for the 21st century, with a completely computer networked campus and each residence hall room wired for voice mail, e-mail, Internet access and free cable TV. Computer labs and state-of-the-art multimedia classrooms further enhance the learning experience. The Cardinal Cushing Library houses reference and circulating collections as well as numerous interdisciplinary online databases and journals. The library provides 96,000 volumes, 850 active journal subscriptions and multimedia materials.
Campus Ministry is a vibrant element of the Emmanuel community, encouraging all members of the community to become actively involved in improving life at the college and beyond. The Campus Ministry Office plans a variety of volunteer opportunities, including the City Year Serve-a-thon, Alternative Spring Break, after-school programs at area schools and many ongoing service placements. Campus Ministry also plans retreats, spiritual discussions and regularly scheduled liturgies.
With more than 1,300 undergraduate and graduate students from 38 countries, the Emmanuel experience offers a unique and rich blend of outlooks, customs and ideas.
