A Career as a Bricklayer
What Bricklayers Do
The work of a MASON is divided into different categories during new construction remodeling, maintenance, and restoration of building and structures. A MASON not only works with brick, but with a variety of material such as limestone, sandstone, granite, marble, terra cotta, tile, terrazzo, cement, firebrick, caulking, acids and sealants. Different masonry materials require the bricklayer to acquire proper mental and physical skills to prepare them for the range of work.
Working Conditions
A majority of work is outdoors. Work depends on weather conditions. Work is done on scaffolding so working at heights is required. Work is active and often strenuous, with stooping and lifting.
Interest and Temperament
Persons should enjoy working with their hands and accept working outside under many different weather conditions. Good eyesight is especially important, as well as careful, accurate work and manual dexterity.
Educational Background
Good reading ability, shop math, general science, drafting, blueprint reading, and welding.
