College Profile:
Georgetown College
Georgetown College is a private, coeducational, residential, Christian, Liberal Arts College that combines its historical Baptist tradition, quality academic programs, and freedom of inquiry to encourage its students to become global citizens who live, learn, and believe with balance and respect. We are located in Kentucky, just 10 minutes from Lexington and approximately one hour from either Louisville or Cincinnati, Ohio.
Founded in 1787 and chartered in 1829, our vibrant, diverse community is student-centered. Small classes and a low student-to-faculty ratio of fifteen-to-one allow professors to know their students well, expressing care while creating demanding and challenging academic programs. We also offer a variety of ways to engage in learning beyond the classroom, including study abroad, both equine and global scholars programs, and numerous service-learning opportunities.
GC has a unique educational program with Regent's Park College at the University of Oxford. Up to five GC students each year attend Oxford, where they participate in the university's tutorial system as well as in its athletic programs. Students can enter the GC-Oxford 3-2 program, where they spend three years at GC, earning a bachelor's degree, then spend two years at Oxford, where they receive a second bachelor's degree. Numerous other study-abroad opportunities in other parts of the world are available through the international study program as well.
Equine Scholars take advantage of the College's location in the middle of horse country through internships and other extracurricular activities. Internships in the equine industry have included photography students working with professional equine photographers at horse shows, and business and economics students working with equine financiers at area financial institutions. Kentucky Horse Park, an equine-themed park and competition facility dedicated to showcasing the relationship between horses and people, offers a myriad of possibilities for GC's equine students.
Service learning is a strong focus for all students at Georgetown and is considered an integral part of the College's Christian framework. During a freshmen orientation program, Into the Streets, students participate in community-service projects in Georgetown and nearby Lexington.
GC is a student-centered, teaching-focused institution. All classes are taught by professors: there are no teaching assistants. Students can choose from 43 majors and 29 minors, as well as a variety of other pre-professional academic programs. The most popular majors are education, premed/biology, communications, and business. The College also offers a new security studies program, based in political science and incorporating Homeland Security issues. Other popular programs include kinesiology and exercise science.
Georgetown is a residential college with a 104-acre campus consisting of a 52-acre north campus and a 52-acre east campus. The Georgian-style campus includes four buildings dating from before the Civil War, showcasing the College's early beginnings.
Living options for Georgetown's nearly 1,400 students range from traditional large dorms for freshmen, to smaller dorms for fraternity and sorority members to apartment-style suites. GC students participating in Greek life make up 35 to 40 percent of the student body.
There are more than 100 groups and organizations students can participate in on campus. Many students are involved in campus ministries and travel on mission trips. Music and drama are popular, and GC's Maskrafters is Kentucky's oldest collegiate theatre company, offering traditional plays, original works, and new initiatives in digital motion picture art. The Foust Cultural Enrichment Program (CEP) as well as the Foust Artist Series brings speakers, music groups, poets, dancers, and dramatic performers to campus.
The GC Tigers are successful participants in NAIA and the Mid-South Athletic conference, and the Cincinnati Bengals hold their summer training camp at GC's athletic complex, practicing in the five-thousand-seat Toyota Stadium.
As part of its African-American initiative, GC has partnered with alumni of the defunct Bishop College. GC's Underground Railroad Institute encourages faculty and students to engage in research about the Underground Railroad in more than 250 sites throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean. GC also is a repository for African-American artifacts and offers scholarships for minorities through various churches.
Georgetown College's distinguished alumni include five Rhodes Scholars, 41 college and university presidents, two Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award winners, 18 Fulbright Scholars since 1990, and numerous other successful graduates who provide distinctive leadership in business, medicine, law, education, communications, ministry, and the arts.
We offer numerous interesting and unique programs to help you find who you really are. We attract some of the brightest, best and most outgoing students anywhere in the country.
