The College
The College of Mount St. Joseph offers its 2,200 students a variety of academic programs, small class sizes, individual attention, and a host of student activities. A campus-wide wireless network enables students to e-mail faculty, check grades, complete research, and register for classes anytime, from anywhere.
The more than 40 clubs and organizations include student government, the student newspaper, academic honor societies, the international club, departmental clubs, marching and concert band, chamber singers, and intramural athletics. Events and activities include Homecoming, spring break service trips, Laughter on the Hill, and MusicFest. The Mount offers a full intercollegiate athletic program for men and women, in the NCAA Division III. Women's programs include basketball, cheerleading, cross-country, dance, golf, lacrosse (2008) soccer, softball, tennis, track & field, and volleyball. Programs for men include baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, tennis, track & field, and wrestling. All 20 of the Mount Lions' teams compete in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference.
Majors and Degrees
The Mount awards bachelor's degrees in the following areas: accounting, art, art education, athletic training, biochemistry, biology, business administration, chemistry, chemistry/mathematics, communication studies, criminology/sociology, inclusive early childhood education, middle childhood education special education, English, fine arts, graphic design, history, interior design, liberal studies, mathematics, music, natural science, nursing, paralegal studies, psychology, religious education, religious pastoral ministry, religious studies, social work, and sociology.
Academic Programs
All majors are backed by a strong liberal arts curriculum that encourages students to develop skills in analytical thinking, problem solving, decision making, and communication. The academic year consists of fall and spring semesters and two summer terms. Classes are held in day, evening or weekend time frames.
To help students explore options in choosing a major, the Academic Exploration Program provides advising, career counseling and the opportunity to attend linked courses with classmates who are also undecided. The Mount's Learning Center offers peer and professional tutoring as well as diagnostic testing and includes math and writing centers.
The Mount's Co-operative Education program offers co-op in every major. Students may begin co-oping as early as the second semester of their sophomore year and gain paid work experience in their field of study. Over 100 local corporations, businesses, health care facilities, schools and nonprofits hire co-ops from the Mount.
Travel and study-abroad programs are available in Germany; London, England; or Seville, Spain. Immersion courses introduce students to the cultures and histories of Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, South Dakota; Tierra Madre Mission, New Mexico; Appalachia; Greece; and Ireland.
Location
Located 15 minutes from downtown Cincinnati, the College is situated on a 92-acre suburban campus overlooking the Ohio River. Mount students often join other students attending colleges and universities in and around Cincinnati to participate in social and service activities. Spacious rooms are available in the newly renovated Seton Center Residence Hall, with some offering private bedrooms, bath and a shared living area for studying and socializing.
Costs
For the 2006–07 academic year, full-time tuition is $19,650. Part-time tuition (less than 12 hours) is $440 per hour. Room costs range from $3100 to $5550, and costs for board range from $3000 to $3200.
Financial Aid
The Mount offers academic scholarship programs in the areas of scholastic achievement and leadership, based on merit or on a combination of merit and need. About 83 percent of full-time undergraduate students receive some form of financial aid. The average financial aid package awarded is $16,400. Part-time employment may be available on the campus or in the metropolitan area.
Faculty
There are 125 full-time professors at the College. Faculty members have been recognized regionally and nationally for their research and expertise outside the classroom as well as for their contributions as teachers, particularly in the fields of art, science, math, sociology, and education. The student-faculty ratio of 11:1 encourages personal interaction among students and professors.
Admission Requirements
The Mount reviews every candidate's request for admission. Credentials should include evidence of a college-prep high school curriculum, grade point average, standardized test scores, leadership, and extracurricular activities. In addition, personal background and attributes, as well as life circumstances are taken into consideration.
