Central Michigan University
College Profile

Central Michigan University students come from a variety of backgrounds, each holding their own unique aspirations for the future. Together, they are immersed in a range of both academic and extra-curricular experiences that allow them to excel and prepare for various careers of the 21st century.

Established in 1892, Central Michigan University is one of the nation's 100 largest public universities and the fourth largest in Michigan, with more than 20,000 students on its Mount Pleasant campus and another 7,000 enrolled online and at more than 60 locations worldwide.

CMU offers 200 academic programs at the undergraduate, master's, specialist and doctoral levels, including nationally recognized programs in entrepreneurship, journalism, music, audiology, teacher education, psychology and physician assistant.

CMU's unique offerings also include the only meteorology major in Michigan and the only bachelor's degree concentration in microscopy in the nation. CMU also has established a College of Medicine, scheduled to open in 2012.

Additionally, there are more than 250 registered student organizations that offer students opportunities across campus and throughout the local communities.

Katie Starr, a CMU senior from Grand Ledge, Mich., is president of the Women's Club Softball Team at CMU, and said student organizations are an exciting way to get involved in almost any area of interest.

"CMU has groups that focus on anything and everything including athletics, academic clubs, student government, sororities and fraternities, honors groups, international cultural organizations, and many others," Starr said. "Personally, being involved has been a very important aspect of my college experience."

As a result, Starr also has formed many lasting friendships and has professionally networked with national athletic organizations and companies.

"My involvement will prove to be a very beneficial resume builder as I work toward my professional career," she said.

Vinay Nunna, an international graduate student from India, is president of CMU's Indian Student Association and helps organize many events throughout the academic year such as Diwali — the Hindu festival of lights, which is celebrated by Hindus in India and all around the world in October or November.

"We have a good cultural representation at Central Michigan," said Nunna, who is studying to be a business analyst. "We feel really welcome here, and we also are very fortunate to have the opportunity to study with such dedicated professors."
