College Profile:
Brookhaven College

Imagine having classes with 30 instead of 300 students for freshman-level courses. Imagine spending less than $500 each semester for a full course load. Imagine having hands-on labs to practice your skills in nursing, visual communications, and automotive technology. For the past 25 years, Brookhaven College in Farmers Branch has offered students the opportunity to further their education, save money while they learn, and get hands-on experience with technical and occupational training.

Opened in 1978, Brookhaven is one of the seven colleges of the Dallas County Community College District, the largest undergraduate institution in the state of Texas. Built on a 200-acre campus at 3939 Valley View Lane in Farmers Branch, Brookhaven College is conveniently located just north of LBJ Freeway (IH-635). More than 10,500 credit students attended classes at Brookhaven College in Spring 2003 seeking associate degrees, college preparatory classes, and transfer credit before moving on to four-year universities or entering the workforce immediately.

Transfer Credit
Planning on going to a four-year university? Save thousands in tuition by taking Core Curriculum courses at Brookhaven College, offering guaranteed transferability of course credit to Texas public colleges and universities. Three-hour courses are just $90 per semester for Dallas-county residents, meaning full-time students pay less than $500 per semester for tuition.

College Preparation
Not sure you are ready for college? Brookhaven College offers specialized courses intended to help students learn to work at the college level. Developmental courses in math, reading, writing, and English for Speakers of Other Languages are especially designed to prepare students for a successful college experience.

Job Training
Looking to start working and want to start soon? Skills achievement awards and one-year certificates are stepping stones in getting the training that can mean a better job. Programs in business, child development, visual communications, accounting, and computer information systems are just some of the programs that offer skills achievement awards and certificate training recognizing 15, 30, or more hours of training in a specified field.

Associate Degree and Certificate Programs
Brookhaven College’s associate in applied science degrees offer specific technical training in occupations such as automotive technology and nursing. Students in these programs work extensively in lab settings, gaining valuable hands-on experience in the skills they are learning in classes. Technical and Occupational programs are presented in business administration, child development, fashion marketing, international business and trade, logistics technology, paramedicine and Visual Basic, among others.

With associate of art or associate of science degrees from Brookhaven College, students have the knowledge and skills they need to enter the workforce or to continue their education at a four-year institution. Degrees are available in anthropology, art, astronomy, biology, computer science, dance, drama, economics, English, government, history, journalism, mathematics, philosophy, and much more.

Student Life
Brookhaven College offers many of the same benefits in student life that a four-year university offers. The athletic programs are non-scholarship but highly competitive for both men and women in baseball, softball, basketball, soccer, and volleyball. The athletic department is a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association.

Students can take the opportunity to participate in a number of clubs and organizations. For those who want to add to their college experience by taking part in a club, Brookhaven College offers organizations focusing on different cultures, academic pursuits, or social conscience. Leadership and community service opportunities are available in student government, Student Leadership Institute, or a service-learning program. Phi Theta Kappa, an internationally recognized honor society for two-year college students, invites students who have achieved academic excellence to participate.

Facilities
The main campus houses three art gallery spaces dedicated to displaying regional, local, and student artists. A 680-seat performance hall allows student dance, music, and theater productions to reach a large audience and for nationally known artists to appear. A Parent-Child Study Center serves as both a licensed child care facility and a learning lab for child development and childcare students. Computer labs include a computer/communications center open to students during the day and evening hours and a business studies computer center housing more than 200 student-use computers.

Support Services
Students receive all the support necessary to make their college experience a success. Advising, career development, financial aid, special services for disadvantaged and disabled students, instructional support, and access to computer laboratories are available.

Brookhaven College has an open door policy and anyone can have an opportunity to enroll. Rising Star scholarships are unique to the colleges of the DCCCD and provide Dallas County high school graduates who show academic potential, and have specific financial need, a way to pay for school. Rising Star scholarships cover the costs of tuition and textbooks, from a student’s initial enrollment to the eventual completion of his or her associate degree.
