Schreiner University
College Profile

Schreiner University is a liberal arts university nestled in the beautiful Hill Country in Kerrville, about five hours from Houston, a 60-minute drive from San Antonio, on IH 10. In fact, currently 8 percent of Schreiner students are from the Houston area.

A supportive university community is a tradition at Schreiner, with professors who excel in the art of teaching, a shared commitment to each student's success, and a campus life that builds lifelong friendships.

One measure of educational value is the amount of personal attention students receive from their professors, and they're getting their money's worth at Schreiner. While enrollment has grown to 1,117, the student-teacher ratio is kept at 13:1. All classes are small and most have fewer than 20 students. Additionally, there are no teaching assistants at Schreiner—all classes are taught by experienced and fully qualified faculty.

Schreiner awards baccalaureate degrees and 27 undergraduate majors and programs of study: accounting, biochemistry, biology, business, chemistry, communication studies, creative arts, education, engineering 3/2, English, exercise science, finance, general studies, graphic design, history, humanities, international business, management, management information systems, marketing, mathematics, music, political science, psychology, religion, sport management and theatre. In addition to these programs, Schreiner offers pre-dentistry, pre-law, pre-medicine, pre-optometry, pre-pharmacy, pre-seminary and pre-veterinary science programs.

Schreiner's outstanding Life Sciences (pre-med, field biology, BSNursing, in particular), graphic design and business integrity programs have all been identified as Signature Programs.

Schreiner's graduate programs include Master of Education, Master of Education plus Teacher Certification, Master of Education plus Principal Certification and Principal Certification. Schreiner's Master of Education degrees are distinctive—they are designed to be completed within a year and are conducted online except for one on-site class per month on Saturday.

Schreiner takes pride in being accessible to most students, even those whose families' financial resources are very limited. One hundred percent of Schreiner's freshmen this fall received financial aid and the average financial aid package for full-time undergraduates is $19,824. Most find the actual cost of a Schreiner education very close to what they would pay at a Texas public university.

Schreiner also offers a rich campus life with more than 35 student organizations that encourage students to develop leadership skills and to apply classroom knowledge to real life challenges.

Related by covenant to the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), Schreiner welcomes students of all faiths. In fact, the faith groups with the highest student representation are Catholic, Baptist and non-denominational. Schreiner's vibrant Campus Ministry program supports a variety of faith and denomination-based student groups.

Nearly one in three Schreiner undergraduates participate in intercollegiate athletics, competing in Division III NCAA American Southwest Conference sports: basketball, baseball, soccer, tennis, softball, golf, volleyball and cross-country.

Within the last decade, Schreiner has spent about $40 million building and upgrading facilities. During the spring 2009 semester, the Mountaineer Fitness Center opened. It features state-of-the-art fitness and recreation facilities, as well as a wellness center. Last fall, students moved into Faulkner Hall, a new campus residence that houses 170 freshmen who enjoy its many amenities.

At Schreiner University, "Learning by Heart" is more than an expression; it embodies the experience of learning with your whole being.
