College Profile:
Goshen College

As a liberal arts college known for its outstanding academic programs and innovative study-abroad opportunities, Goshen College prepares students for successful careers and vocations that allow them to transform lives and change the world. Goshen College was founded in 1894 and is affiliated with the Mennonite Church, one of the historic peace churches.

A Goshen College education is a joy-filled journey, packed with life-changing adventures and opportunities. Your steps along this journey will be guided by our core values of Christ-centeredness, passionate learning, global citizenship, compassionate peacemaking and servant leadership.

At Goshen College, you can engage issues of faith in any context: while in an environmental science class, tutoring in a local school, enjoying a coffee break at Java Junction on campus with your roommate or participating in a chapel service. Goshen's learning and caring community includes a spirit of deep questioning, as each of us seeks to serve God in the best way we know how.

Location, campus
Located in northern Indiana, Goshen is a diverse community of 30,000, 120 miles east of Chicago. The campus includes 135 acres and 19 major buildings, including the $24 million Music Center and apartment-style residences for seniors. Goshen College operates a 1,150-acre Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center south of Goshen and a marine biology facility in the Florida Keys.

Our students
We have approximately 1,000 men and women from more than 35 states and 37 countries, representing more than 40 different Christian denominations and several world religions. Nearly 20,000 alumni live in more than 90 countries, serving others in extraordinary ways.

Academic overview
Goshen offers more than 60 programs of study, including 32 majors and 34 minors and two master's degree programs. Two-thirds of our faculty members hold doctorates and most have lived and worked outside the United States. They are known as excellent teachers and mentors as well as accomplished scholars, authors and researchers. Eighty-five percent of classes have fewer than 25 students, with a student-faculty ratio of 13:1. Goshen is a place where you can both prepare for a profession and become a passionate learner: we rank in the top sixth among national liberal arts colleges for graduates who go on to earn doctoral degrees.

International study
By attending Goshen College, you can teach English in China, research environmental conservation in PerĂº and do much more. Nearly 40 years ago, Goshen pioneered its Study-Service Term, an innovative and prestigious program.
Goshen students and their faculty leaders spend 13 weeks engaged in cultural study and service projects in countries such as Cambodia, Germany, Jamaica, Nicaragua and Senegal. On campus and around the world, students are challenged to transcend cultural barriers and become global citizens.

Become a peacemaker
In hundreds of ways each day, Goshen students practice living as compassionate peacemakers. They study in our peace, justice and conflict studies program or join a Campus Ministries prayer or service project. They spend semesters at the Indianapolis Peace Institute or study urban justice issues. As a community, we joyfully strive to live out loving kindness, restore justice, practice anti-racism and advocate for the silenced.

Lead by serving others
Following the example of servant leadership that was taught and lived by Jesus, Goshen students regularly participate in meaningful service — volunteering for Habitat for Humanity, participating in the annual Celebrate Service Day, teaching children about the environment or simply listening to someone's struggles.

New intercultural center
In October 2006, Goshen College announced creation of the Center for Intercultural Teaching and Learning. The center is focusing on three areas: recruiting and retaining regional Latino and other minority students; creating an intercultural learning environment; and researching the resources and challenges that changing demographics bring to a rural Midwest community and to higher education. The center is building on the college's academic strengths, core values and its experience in international education and extending these to the diverse local community.

Environmental leadership
The Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center of Goshen College is offering a Master of Arts in Environmental Education program. Merry Lea also continues to be a leader in sustainability. In 2006, it dedicated its "green" biological field station, designed to earn Platinum or high Gold LEED rating from the U.S. Green Building Council — the only LEED building in Indiana registered at this level.

Financial aid
At Goshen College, costs are almost 10 percent lower than the national average for four-year, private institutions. Nearly 99 percent of full-time students receive some form of financial assistance, with an average package of scholarships, grants, loans and work-study totaling $17,555.
