Bloomfield College
Founded in 1868, Bloomfield College (BC) is an independent four-year co-educational college that offers a wide variety of programs in the liberal arts and sciences, creative arts and technology, and professional studies. The College is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).
Majors and Degrees
Bloomfield College offers Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees.
Majors and their concentrations include accounting (professional accounting
and general accounting), allied health technologies (diagnostic medical
sonography, nuclear medicine technology, respiratory care, vascular technology),
biology (environmental studies, general biology, pre-chiropractic studies,
pre-podiatric studies, and pre-professional studies), business administration
(with specializations in computer information systems, economics, finance,
human resource management, management, marketing, and materials management),
chemistry (biochemistry and general chemistry), clinical laboratory sciences
(cytotechnology, medical technology, and toxicology), computer information
systems, creative arts and technology (animation, digital video, fine
arts, graphics for print and digital media, interactive multimedia and
the world wide web, music supervision—sound designer/audio engineering,
record production—artist development, and theatre), education (elementary
and early childhood education, secondary education), English (communications,
literature, video/television production, and writing), history, mathematics
(applied mathematics, internet technology), nursing, philosophy, political
science (general, public administration, and public policy), psychology,
religion, and sociology (criminal justice and general sociology).
The Advanced Technology Institute offers vendor-authorized certification training for Microsoft, Cisco, Oracle, and Sun. Web Master training is also available.
Athletics
Bloomfield College offers men's baseball, basketball, cross-country,
and soccer, and women's softball, basketball, volleyball, and soccer.
Bloomfield College is a provisional member of NCAA Division II, and will
become a full member by fall of 2002. Bloomfield is part of the Central
Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC). Intramural programs include men's
and women's basketball and volleyball.
Academic Support
The Center for Academic Development offers individual tutoring and group
workshops to all students. Academic advising is ongoing, and students
meet with their advisors before registering each semester. Other support
services include the Educational Opportunity Fund Program, career counseling
and placement, women's services, and the College Health Service.
An extensive English for Academic Purposes program is also available.
Student Activities
Students can choose from more than thirty-five organizations, including
student government, the Nursing Student Association, the Association of
Latin American Students, the International Student Association, and a
variety of departmental clubs and social organizations. Campus publications
include In Print, the College yearbook, and Common Ground, the honors
literary magazine. The College Center is the social and recreational focus,
with meeting rooms, the Deacon's Den, lounges, and the Office of
Co-Curricular Programs. Also located in the College Center are the bookstore
and the newly renovated Wellness Center, which provides personal counseling,
a full-time nurse, and the office of the College Chaplain.
Student Housing
The College provides special residence halls for first-year students.
"Theme" houses are available for upperclassmen. Housing priority
is given to first-year students and students who live beyond a reasonable
commuting distance. A complete residence life program provides academic,
social, and recreational programs for resident students.
Location
Located in Bloomfield, New Jersey, a suburban, residential town just 15
miles from New York City, the College is accessible by bus, train, or
car. Students have easy access to New York City, the Meadowlands, ski
resorts and numerous recreational opportunities.
Academic Facilities
The new library houses a collection of more than 64,000 titles, including
subscriptions to more than 400 periodicals and 1,000 electronic journals,
an up-to-date reference collection, and thousands of reels of microfilm
and microfiche, as well as musical recordings and scores, films, and videotapes.
The library is open Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., Saturday
from 8:45 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and Sunday from 4:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. The
library also houses the Media Center, which consists of three electronic
classrooms, a distance learning room, and a screening room.
Technology
Academic Computing facilities boast 10 laboratories, with over 200 computers.
The new Pollack Computer Center, located in the library, is open 24/7.
All campus computers are networked and all computers were new in 2000.
Technical support is available, and laptops may be rented through the
Media Center.
Financial Aid
More than 90 percent of full-time Bloomfield College students receive
some form of financial assistance. Academic and athletic scholarships
are available, as is access to college, state, and federal programs, such
as grants, loans, and work-study.
Faculty
A highly qualified and diverse faculty instructs more than 1,900 students
of all ages in day, evening, and weekend sessions, with a student-faculty
ratio of 14:1. Approximately 65 percent of the full-time faculty members
have earned doctorates or terminal degrees.
Study Abroad
Bloomfield College is a member of the College Consortium for International
Studies (CCIS). Students have the choice of more than 75 study abroad
programs in 30 countries around the world for a semester, a summer, or
a full academic year.
Admission Requirements
Bloomfield College admits qualified applicants who demonstrate motivation,
desire, and the potential to benefit from and contribute to programs of
study in the liberal arts and sciences, creative arts and technology,
and professional studies. Applications are accepted throughout the year
on a rolling basis, and applicants are notified within one week of the
College's receipt of required materials. Once admitted, students
are placed according to their academic preparation and achievement.
Application and Information
All applicants are encouraged to visit the College to discuss their academic
and career plans with an admission counselor. Applicants may also spend
a day on campus attending classes and talking with students and faculty
members. Recommended application deadlines are April 15 for the fall semester
and December 15 for the spring semester. Applications received after these
dates are considered on a space-available basis.
