College Profile:
Baldwin-Wallace College

At Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio, your success begins with the first meeting with your faculty advisor.

Baldwin-Wallace College has long been known for preparing students for rewarding careers through studies in more than 50 fields, while also preparing them for a life worth living through a liberal arts curriculum that is at its core.

The basic tools-the rigorous courses, the experiential learning, the leadership activities, the close interaction with mentors-have long been a part of the B-W experience. Students have combined some or all of these to create a four-year program that has prepared them for a career or graduate school.

Now, however, these tools have been pulled together more formally, to ensure that students can incorporate all of these opportunities into their years at B-W, in order to be ready to make the leap from college to a successful life after graduation.

The B-W Action Plan will be every student's roadmap to success. It is a plan that will help students pool and record the resources from all areas of the College that best fit their needs. Working with faculty advisors, students will create and document their own personal Action Plan.

"From the moment I arrived on campus, I experienced nonstop growth and change-both intellectually and socially, said former student body president, Léna Kavaliauskas '05. "I learned to interact with diverse individuals, and each person had a profound impact on me. Of all the qualities Baldwin-Wallace possesses, what I love most is how many opportunities there are available to students."

The Courses: B-W's curriculum helps students build skills of clear thinking and communication regardless of their majors. Some programs like the interdisciplinary Asian studies minor help prepare students to work and live in an international setting.

Experiential Learning: Combining classroom work with projects, internships and field experiences, off-campus study, community service and research provides a rich educational program, which helps to make B-W students better prepared for a job or graduate school. Among students' recent opportunities have been working with the ABC Nightline crew that taped a show on campus, traveling to Africa to help build a school, mentoring a group of inner-city high school students who hope to become teachers or working with elected officials to develop a shared safety service program for five communities.

Activities: Campus life and co-curricular activities are a vital part of a well-rounded education. Through participation in such programs as Student Senate, recreation, student media, and a host of other special interest organizations, students expand their social skills, build leadership skills, find new interests and experience the joy of participating and belonging.

Mentors: A career mentor can provide valuable support for students both with academic and career interests. Mentors may provide valuable networking opportunities and, in many cases, continue to offer assistance beyond graduation. Faculty mentors often involve students in their own research projects. Students may be listed as co-authors of scholarly papers and often go to professional conferences to present the research with their faculty mentor. Through the Summer Scholars program, students design their own research projects and receive housing and a stipend to focus on the research with their faculty mentors during the summer break.
