Kent State University

With 33,000 students on eight campuses, Kent State University is the second largest university in the state and has the largest residential campus in northeast Ohio. While the Kent Campus offers selective admissions, seven other campuses located throughout northeast Ohio—the Ashtabula, Geauga, East Liverpool, Salem, Stark, Trumbull, and Tuscarawas campuses—offer open admissions.

Kent State University ranks among the top 90 public research universities in the country, according to the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. This places us among an elite 3.8 percent of the nation’s nearly 3,900 colleges and universities.

Kent State earns national recognition for its breadth of high-quality undergraduate programs balanced with innovative research and graduate studies in selected areas. Communications
Kent State offers well-recognized programs in several fields of communication, including visual communication design, print and electronic journalism, and information sciences. Our graduates are prepared for careers in a world of converging media and instant information.

Education
From underprivileged school districts nearby to villages in developing countries halfway around the world, our education students touch the lives of more than 210,000 children every year. Our superior curriculum combines a rich tradition of excellence with the latest developments in educational technology and resources.

Sciences and Liquid Crystals
Kent State’s Liquid Crystal Institute (LCI) is the nation’s leading center for liquid crystal technology, research, and education. Our other science programs offer numerous study and research opportunities, for undergraduate as well as graduate students.

Performing Arts
Committed to maintaining excellence in the visual and performing arts, Kent State is a major cultural resource for Northeast Ohio. For example, the Kent/Blossom Arts Festivals offer advanced summer study in art, music and theater, including a unique learning opportunity with the Cleveland Orchestra.

Fashion
Every year, through partnerships with JCPenney and Sears, students of the Shannon Rodgers and Jerry Silverman School of Fashion Design and Merchandising have the opportunity to see their designs on the rack at retailers nationwide. Students get real-world experience as they conduct market research, develop potential product lines, and present their ideas at the companies’ corporate headquarters.

Architecture and Urban Design
Kent State has the region’s only school of architecture. Through a unique city-university partnership, the Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative, students apply their talents and imagination to real-world projects, from Playhouse Square to the Flats and beyond.

Nursing
The College of Nursing, established in 1967, is the state’s largest nursing school. It offers one of the most comprehensive undergraduate programs in Ohio and a doctoral collaboration with the University of Akron. Our nursing graduates have a reputation for excellent academic performance, clinical knowledge, and leadership ability.

Business
The U.S. News & World Report 2002 America’s Best Colleges ranking includes Kent State’s College of Business Administration among the Best Undergraduate Business Programs. We are the only public university in Northeast Ohio on the list of the 148 programs.

Honors College
The Honors College offers special appeal for undergraduates with outstanding intellectual and creative ability. Honors students enjoy enriched and challenging courses, as well as opportunities for close relationships with peers and faculty.

Campus Life
Kent State is a growing and thriving university that boasts steadily increasing enrollment and strong athletic programs, with the men’s basketball team reaching the coveted NCAA Elite Eight last season. Numerous other teams have brought home MAC championship trophies in recent years.

Despite its size, Kent State is known for providing highly personal attention to its students, who come from 49 states and 90 foreign countries, and include a 10 percent minority population.

Located on the banks of the Cuyahoga River, the Kent Campus features a classic living-learning environment, with more than 6,000 students living in its 29 residence halls. In addition, six new residence halls are planned or under construction to meet the growing enrollment and changing needs of today’s students. Also, in a recent crime-on-campus report, Kent State was named one of the safest campuses in Ohio by the FBI/UCR and Consortium for Higher Education Campus Crime Research.

Students also enjoy the many cultural offerings on campus and in nearby communities, as well as the Student Recreation and Wellness Center, a 153,000-square-foot world-class facility. And Kent State students can boast of being on one of the nation’s most wired campuses. Yahoo’s Most Wired Colleges included us in its top 100 rankings 5 years in a row (31st in 2001), and Yahoo Internet Life magazine gave our web site an “A” rating—making us one of only 28 colleges and universities to receive this ranking.
