Study Abroad for College Students

The thirteen colleges that make up the Great Lakes Colleges Association are all
small, residential liberal arts colleges located in Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Though each is unique, with its own character and strengths, in at least one important way they are similar. All these schools place a high value on the educational benefits gained from student study abroad. Study abroad is a vital dimension of a liberal arts education, providing students with a forum for developing a diverse and global perspective. If you compare the typical percentage of students at most U.S. colleges and universities who are able to travel abroad during their undergraduate career, you would discover that a much higher proportion of GLCA students enjoy this experience. At some of the GLCA member schools, over 60% of the student population have studied abroad in one of many types of programs. Many of the GLCA member institutions operate their own programs, developed and taught by GLCA faculty; these supplement a large number of programs that are approved for study around the world. Only students in good standing academically receive this permission, making the experience one for the most committed of students, which ensures a higher quality experience for those who participate.

Study abroad programs include locations in Central and South America, Europe, African, Asia, Middle East, South Pacific, Australia, and New Zealand. No matter where your international study interest lies, there is something for everyone.

In addition to the international locations, there are study abroad programs which includes domestic programs – New York Arts, Philadelphia Center, Oak Ridge Sciences (Tennessee), Border Studies (U.S. and Mexican border), and the Newberry Library (Chicago).

If the opportunity to study abroad is an important criteria for you in your search for the right college, take a look at one or more of the Great Lakes!
