Under the Open Ontario plan, the province is actively promoting its postsecondary institutions abroad and wants to increase international attendance by 50 percent over the next five years. This is good news for American students, since studying in Ontario offers the opportunity to receive a high quality education that can be a lot less expensive than in the US.

Ontario is home to 44 public universities and colleges and more than 450 Private Career Colleges. There are more than 37,000 international students from almost 200 countries enrolled across the province. College & University

Ontario has 24 publicly funded colleges and can provide American students with options to find the perfect program for them. Colleges offer a variety of options including one year certificate programs, two and three year diploma programs, post-graduate certificate programs, apprenticeship and certification programs, and four year bachelor degrees in applied areas of study. In many cases, an Ontario college diploma can also provide a pathway to further your studies at an Ontario or American university.

Ontario is home to 20 publicly funded universities. Ontario's universities are a gateway for students to achieve higher learning. Ontario universities offer an amazing variety of programs leading to Bachelors, Masters, or Doctorate degrees, as well as collaborative programs with colleges.

Admission Criteria and Deadlines

When applying to a college or university in Ontario, American students need the following documentation:

  • All academic transcripts: either original or certified copies from your high school and if applicable, postsecondary education records including courses and grades
  • Proof of English-language or French-language proficiency
  • An application fee

American students can apply online to the programs and institutions that they are interested in at least nine months before the program's expected start date. Check with the institutions for more information regarding tuition, living costs, scholarships, bursaries, admission requirements and more.
