What a difference 16 weeks can make!
It's a choice that may totally transform your life… in 4 little months.
Now let me tell you Amy Walker's story.
From Fashion Exec to Television Photographer…One Woman's Story of Following Her Dream!
She received her BA in Fashion Design, and her Masters in Business Management. Amy thought the fashion world was calling her, however, she entered the workforce and realized the world of fashion was not what she expected. She wanted more out of life. She wanted to be happy about going to work.
Enter The Atlanta Broadcast Institute.
Amy always realized that she had a strong interest in sports broadcasting. So she tried everything to get her foot in the door at a television station, thinking that with her education and experience, surely someone would give her a chance in an entry-level job. She couldn't even get an interview. Then she heard an ad on the radio about changing your life and doing what you really wanted to do. She took the leap of faith, and enrolled at ABI.
Amy had to overcome several obstacles to pursue her new career. After only a few short weeks she had to withdraw from school to have back surgery, and then come back and start over from the beginning following the recovery. That did not keep her from her dream. She knew this is where she wanted to be. She returned to class, and from the first day that she walked back into classroom at the Atlanta Broadcast Institute, Amy knew she was home. Ms. Walker not only mastered Cool Edit (a radio program used by many commercial radio stations) but she also possessed a great aptitude for Avid Express (a television program used to edit video at commercial television stations.) She studied hard, took constructive criticism from seasoned broadcast professionals, and made the most of school contacts. Amy also spent an elaborate amount of time entrenching herself in her desire to excel and succeed in her new career. She spent and still spends countless hours honing her hands-on-skills in one of 3 radio production studios the students of ABI affectionately call their home away from home.
Before she even finished the four month program at ABI, Amy got her foot in the door at a small station in Griffin. After only 3 days, the station manager handed Amy the keys, and decided she was ready to go it alone. She did a little bit of everything... selling swap shop items for local residents, reporting the weather, voicing and producing station promos, even reading obituaries over the air. And after 3 short months and a lot of networking, she learned enough to take it to the next step. WGST, a news talk giant in Atlanta was where she set her sights, and as Amy has done her whole life, she realized her dream and became a part of the WGST team.
Amy took a chance on herself, after spending numerous years of time and effort for one career, she knew she wouldn't be happy. She embarked on a new life, with the help of ABI, and began what has become a very fruitful 3 years in the business. She worked, and continues to work at WGST as a board operator, producer, traffic and weather reporter, and a sports reporter for GNN. From there, she immersed herself with stints as a reporter on a television show that showcases the Atlanta Falcons, worked as part of the on-site audio production team for the Atlanta Braves, and currently serves as a production staff freelancer for the Fox Sports South, where she gathers stats, builds the sports ticker, runs the, and edits tape for sports shows and produces various segments. Atlanta is a melting pot for broadcast talent, and Amy seeks out every opportunity to further her career.
Amy also puts her talents to work as an instructor at ABI, and as the Assistant Director of Admissions. She works countless hours and her schedule is crazy, but if you ask Amy Walker about her life, she'll tell you she loves what she does.
A common saying among broadcast professionals is "A bad day in radio is better than a good day anywhere else".
And ALL of this in just a few short years!
With her drive, enthusiasm and the help of the placement director and other members of the staff at The Atlanta Broadcast Institute, the sky is the only limit for Ms. Walker.
The same can happen to you.
