The ALBAT Program
The ALBAT Program is one of nine such apprenticeship and training programs in the nation dedicated to the outside electrical industry. With a career in the exciting field of outside electrical construction, our apprentices are in high demand. Communities need to remain powered – and their demands for electrical energy are constantly growing as new innovations in technology continue to develop. This has created a tremendous need for quality trained individuals to maintain existing systems and install new ones for growing communities.
The American Line Builders Joint Apprenticeship & Training Committee (ALBAT) is a cooperative undertaking by the American Line Builders Chapter NECA and the IBEW, Fourth and Sixth Districts. This cooperative effort is in response to the need for a recognized pragmatic program for training persons in the skills of performing outside electrical construction work.
Due to the nature of Outside Electrical Construction work, workers are required to move about from place to place to follow the progress of the work. It is also necessary for apprentices to travel from area to area, not only to contribute toward the progress of the job, but also to obtain the diversity of work experience required to become a competent Journeyman.
Apprentices complete a national course of study that has been specifically designed for each outside electrical apprenticeship classification. The apprentices must also attend related training sessions on their own time, generally, one four-hour session each month, from September through June. They hold lecture sessions, help the apprentice with the course material, and administer the tests. Upon satisfactory completion of the required hours of on-the-job training and the related course material, the apprentice is then advanced to Journeyman status.
