Air Force ROTC graduates can apply for positions consistent with their academic major. Other graduates, who wish to do so, may qualify to become pilots and navigators. Many career opportunities are also available to include: Engineering, Intelligence, Communications, Nursing and many others. Graduates who complete graduation and AFROTC requirements enter active duty as second lieutenants. Most officers serve a 4 year commitment on active duty. Pilots, navigators, and medical doctors incur a longer commitment after additional education and training. Based on availability, officers who qualify may take graduate training prior to beginning their military duties.
Air Force ROTC has different types of scholarships available to high school and college students. These scholarships may pay up to full tuition and fees, plus a textbook allowance and a monthly subsistence allowance. All members receive a subsistence allowance in their final two academic years, whether on scholarship or not. High school students should apply online at WWW.AFROTC.COM before December 1st of their senior year. College students should contact the local unit for information on current scholarships and application process.
The state of Illinois also provides tuition waivers (separate from AFROTC scholarships) to Illinois residents that become AFROTC members and attend a state college. For more information about the Illinois State Tuition Waiver contact the local unit.
AFROTC consists of a Leadership Laboratory, classroom instruction and Physical Training. Leadership Laboratory activities can range from military customs (marching, saluting, wear of uniforms, etc.) to group leadership projects designed to create teamwork and leadership training. Cadets will be provided with ROTC textbooks and uniforms at no cost. After completing the General Military Course (GMC) requirements you must successfully complete a 4 week summer field training encampment at an Air Force base. Upon successful completion of Field Training, you will return for your junior year and be entered into the Professional Officer Course (POC). As a POC, you'll apply what you have learned in the General Military Course and at field training to conduct the leadership laboratories and manage the cadet corps. Your classroom instruction is more comprehensive with group discussions and cadet presentations. Classroom topics include military history, management, leadership, communication and national defense policy. Physical training is mandatory two times a week.
