As a Field Construction Boilermaker, an Apprentice is involved in much more than the construction of boilers. In fact, Apprentices typically utilize their technical skills and knowledge to perform the following tasks and duties:
- Welding
- Rigging
- Utilize Pneumatic and Electric Hoists
- Use Hand Signals to Control Crane, Hoist Operations
- Change Crane Booms
- Assemble, Disassemble Scaffolds & Platforms
- Inspect, Care for Rigging Equipment
- Burn & Gouge
- Remove, Bevel, Replace & Roll Tubes
- Read Blueprints
- Reeve Blocks
- Align, Fit Field Components
- Load, Unload Materials
To become a Journeyman Boilermaker, Apprentices are required to complete 6,000-hours of on-the-job training, typically taking four years. During that time, Apprentices must satisfactorily complete self-study lessons, submit on-the-job training modules and attend classroom instruction.
Apprentices will likely experience the following working conditions:
- Weather Exposure – Extreme Heat, Cold
- Demanding, Strenuous Work
- Working at Great Heights
- Traveling to different Jobsites
