Brookhaven College

Dream it, achieve it at Brookhaven College! The college’s faculty and staff members are committed to helping students succeed by providing an environment that emphasizes creativity, critical thinking, reflection and responsible decision-making. Brookhaven College serves around 10,500 credit students each semester and has thousands more noncredit students who take courses through the Workforce and Continuing Education Division.

Brookhaven College offers full-length semester courses beginning in August and January, as well as two summer sessions and flex entry courses that begin year-round.

Program Offerings
Serving northwest Dallas County as part of the Dallas County Community College District since 1978, Brookhaven College provides a full range of freshman- and sophomore-level academic credit courses. Courses may be applied toward an associate degree or transferred to a four-year college or university. The Core Curriculum is guaranteed to transfer to public universities in Texas. Career and technical education programs prepare students for immediate entrance into the workforce and can lay a foundation for a bachelor’s degree. Along with traditional transfer class offerings, Brookhaven College’s technical program offerings include accounting, automotive technology, business administration, child development, computer information systems, e-commerce, emergency medical services, geospatial technology, international business and trade, management, marketing, nursing, office technology, paramedicine, radiologic technology and visual communications. Faculty
The college employs about 120 full-time and about 550 adjunct faculty members who are passionate about teaching. Faculty credentials for those teaching transfer courses include a master’s or doctoral degree, with at least 18 graduate hours in the teaching discipline. In non-transfer programs, professors may hold a baccalaureate or an associate degree in the teaching field depending on accreditation and industry standards. Many professors also teach in the college’s developmental programs that help students prepare for college-level courses.

Flexible Scheduling
Although many attend day classes, Brookhaven College also offers evening, weekend and flexible classes to provide a convenient time for most schedules. Internet- and video-based distance learning courses also are available in many subject areas. Students can attend Brookhaven College while attending another college or university. Some even begin their coursework while still in high school through the dual credit program.

Facilities
Located on a 192-acre campus, Brookhaven College's 16 buildings include facilities such as the Ellison Miles Geotechnology Institute that offers Earth science education, a Learning Resources Center housing a 58,000-volume library, a 680-seat performance hall, three art galleries, and instructional labs with computers and other resources. A two-mile jogging/exercise trail serves students, employees and members of the community. Brookhaven College looks forward to the 2009 opening of its 140,000-square-foot Science and Allied Health Building, part of the 2004 Dallas County Community College District Bond Program; an 11,000-square-foot addition and 18,000 square-foot renovation of its Automotive Technology Building and new 25,000 square-foot Workforce and Continuing Education Building.

Campus Life
Recent research in higher education indicates that for many students involvement is an important contributor to academic success. That's why the college plans activities to encourage your involvement in college life.

Student Programs And Resources/Student Life staff plans and presents a variety of programs and activities for students and the surrounding community. These programs may include parties, lectures and performance events to provide students with a stimulating co-curricular education. Brookhaven College has more than 30 clubs, an active Student Government Association, a Student Leadership Institute and a Service-Learning Program. Leadership conferences, retreats, diversity training and volunteer opportunities offer you opportunities to develop skills that enrich your quality of life.

Athletic programs at Brookhaven College include men’s baseball and basketball and women’s volleyball and soccer. The women’s volleyball team won the National Junior College Athletics Association Division III National Women’s Volleyball championship in 2004 and 2005, and has returned to the national championships each year since then.

Tuition
Brookhaven College offers you an affordable educational experience. Courses begin at only $41 per credit hour for students residing in Dallas County. Financial aid is available in the forms of grants, scholarships, loans and student employment from various federal, state, institutional and private sources. Financial aid is available to students with financial need and also to those without need.

Workforce and Continuing Education
Continuing education classes offer personal or professional development in a variety of subjects including art, business, computers, health care careers, education, English for Speakers of Other Languages, music, nonprofit management, real estate and more. More than 400 online courses are available from the college in partnership with several recognized training institutions. Youth programs and an arts academy offer fun and educational courses for babies through high school students. Customized corporate training also is available at your company or on our campus.
