The Delaware College of Art and Design (DCAD) is the result of a creative partnership of two of America's most distinguished colleges of the visual arts, Pratt Institute in New York and the Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington, D.C., and is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. Graduates of DCAD's two-year associate degree program may choose to enter the art and design work force or complete a four-year BFA degree by continuing their education at Pratt or the Corcoran. The associate degree program is offered in six disciplines: Animation, Fine Arts, Graphic Design, Illustration, Photography and Interior Design. The Continuing Education program at DCAD offers a wide range of fine and professional arts classes and certificate programs open to the community. A large gallery on Sixth and Market Streets promotes regular exhibitions of student and faculty work, as well as curated exhibits featuring work of regional and national significance. DCAD serves as a leader in Wilmington's educational and cultural life through community-based activities, and as a focal point for downtown revitalization. The Saville Apartments, located across from DCAD's studio and academic facilities, offers DCAD students convenient, luxury apartments at reasonable rates. Press Releases:

DCAD Receives National Accreditation

Wilmington, DE (May 23, 2008) – The Delaware College of Art and Design has received accreditation by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD), making it the only college or university in Delaware to have done so.

DCAD was granted independent accreditation last month by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), which manages degree granting colleges and universities in the mid-Atlantic region through a voluntary, peer review process.

Through Middle States, students are now eligible to receive additional Title IV funding from the federal government.

DCAD, the first and only professional art and design school in Delaware, has been working towards both accreditations for more than two years.

NASAD, founded in 1944, is the national accrediting agency for art and design and art and design related disciplines. It’s an association of approximately 280 schools of art and design, primarily at the collegiate level, but also including postsecondary non-degree-granting schools for the visual arts disciplines.

The accreditation process included participation by DCAD in a self-study involving faculty, administration and students, an on-site review by a team of trained NASAD evaluators and final review by the commission.

DCAD Receives Middle States Accreditation
New status allows college to receive more Title IV funds

Wilmington, DE (March 31, 2008) – The Delaware College of Art and Design will have another reason to celebrate at the Decade of DCAD + 1 fundraiser this May.

DCAD has received independent accreditation by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), which manages degree granting colleges and universities in the mid-Atlantic region through a voluntary, peer review process.  The college has been working towards this goal for more than two years.

"I am very proud that DCAD has been nationally recognized by receiving independent accreditation," said Stuart B. Young, chairman of DCAD's Board of Directors. "This kind of recognition will enhance our reputation as an excellent art and design college. It should help us attract more students and bring more vitality to downtown Wilmington."

DCAD was founded in 1997 as a collaborative effort between two of America's most distinguished art schools, Pratt Institute and the Corcoran College of Art and Design. DCAD was formed as a branch campus of the Corcoran.

As an independent institution, students will now be eligible to receive additional Title IV funding from the federal government.

Although DCAD will self-regulate and abide by Middle States standards, the partnership with Pratt and the Corcoran will continue. Students who successfully complete their Associate of Fine Arts Degree at DCAD will be able to transfer as juniors to either school to complete their bachelor's degree.

Near year, DCAD will award more than $700,000 in tuition aid, helping to attract more talented students and increase enrollment. The college hopes to raise money for merit- and need-based scholarships at A Decade of DCAD + 1, a night of art and entertainment, to be held on Thursday, May 8, from 6-10 p.m. at the college.

This year's honorary chairman is George "Frolic" Weymouth. The event will include the sale of student works of art, and live and silent auction items. Tickets are $75.

To purchase tickets, call 302-622-8000 or visit www.dcadevents.com.

DCAD Announces Plans for The Copeland Student Center

December 3rd, 2007

Students at the Delaware College of Art and Design (DCAD) will soon get a hangout of their own - a new student center.

The 3,200-square-foot space will include a lounge, light food and drink service; fitness equipment; a game room, bookstore, and art supply counter. The estimated $450,000 facility will be located on the first floor of the Saville Apartments at 521 King Street.

"As our student body has grown dramatically, we need an all purpose student center," said Stuart B. Young, chairman of DCAD's Board of Directors. "The student center will bring all the students together to develop friendship and exchange ideas. It will be great for developing collegiality among our students."

Construction of The Copeland Student Center is being made possible through the generosity of art patrons Tatiana and Gerret Copeland and the support of The Buccini/Pollin Group. With their support, DCAD will be able to meet the need to provide a student center facility for its growing population of both residential and commuter students.

Plans are currently underway to rehabilitate two unused retail spaces at the Saville Apartments to create the on-campus student center.

"I'm very excited about being part of the downtown renaissance," said Tatiana Copeland. "It has been a long time in coming and this student center development is happening at the right time and at the right place. My husband and I are deeply honored to have the center named after us."

Construction of the student center will help fulfill one of DCAD's core missions - the revitalization of downtown Wilmington.

"It will complete the four corners of 6th and Market that DCAD started with Kuumba Academy and David Bromberg's violin store," said James P. Lecky, DCAD Director/Dean. "The student center will be a vibrant focal point. It will increase downtown activity"

arQitecture, a local architecture and interior design firm, is currently working on a design that "merges a modern activity space with intimate study areas," said Sarah Lamb, project manager. Buccini/Pollin will build the student center.

A major portion of funding has already been committed to this project, with an anticipated completion date of May 2008. The necessary building endowment has not yet been funded.

"The DCAD student center is one of many efforts for Buccini/Pollin in their aim to revitalize Market Street - the City of Wilmington's most historic corridor - into a place in which people live, work and shop," a company spokeswoman said.

This semester, DCAD enrolled 215 students, of which 140 live downtown - 100 at the Saville - and 40 at other locations throughout the city. It is the largest incoming class in the school's history.

Today, students live and work in the 42-unit complex, which includes luxury apartments located across from the college's studio and academic facilities at 600 N. Market Street. The student center will be available to the DCAD community only.

The Saville, formerly Mullins Department store, was purchased by the school in March of 2006. Before that, the college rented portions of the building.

Erin Sweeney, 18, a first year interior design student from Allentown, PA, is excited about the student center. She lives at the Saville.

"We're going to have an actual place where we can all go and hang out," she said. "There's no real place now to get together and do things. I'm really looking forward to the school store and the gym equipment, because there is nothing around here."

DCAD students had input on the program for the space, developed through surveys put together by the Department of Student Services.

DCAD is Delaware's first and only professional art and design school. The college offers The Associate of Fine Arts Degree in Animation, Fine Arts, Graphic Design, Illustration, Interior Design and Photography. DCAD was founded in 1997 as a collaborative effort between two of America's most distinguished art schools, Pratt Institute and the Corcoran College of Art and Design.
