Overview
For 86 years, the College of Mount St. Joseph has been a part of Cincinnati, mentoring and educating students to serve and work in the community. More than 90% of graduates responding to recent surveys are either employed in full-time positions or pursuing additional studies. And, more than 100 businesses, health care facilities, schools, and non profits hire Mount cooperative education students.
The Mount is a private, Catholic liberal arts college located west of downtown in Delhi Township. The College emphasizes a value-centered education, academic excellence, diversity, respect for others, and service.
Students and Service
Students pride themselves on many things, but they're particularly proud of their involvement in the community. There's even an office on campus devoted exclusively to service learning. It's where students pick up assignments to help out at Our Daily Bread, Bethany House, Working in Neighborhoods, Earth Connection.
Service Learning Program Director Mary Bookser, S.C. says: "As always, part of my hope is that students build some community among themselves, while learning about issues in our local society."
Academic Programs
Mount students continue to discover that small class sizes and an outstanding faculty encourage individualized learning. Since its introduction this year, the Academic Exploration Program has helped a large number of students to discover their potential, choose a major, and pursue their role in society.
If you're in a Humanities class, you may meet famous Cincinnati authors and a poet or two. In the sciences, labs are equipped to study forensics, anatomy, galaxies, stars, biology, and chemistry. Human behavior gives you choices in psychology, criminology, sociology and social work, while philosophy and religious studies help you put everything together. You may be drawn to art--ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, graphic or interior design. And the Mount continues to educate teachers and nurses, sending them into the community to teach and heal.
"I help students, no matter what their major, to discover what it all means—to see the interconnectedness of things," says Dr. Shirley Hoenigman of the Chemistry Department.
Achievement is supported through the Academic Performance Center, which offers peer tutoring, a Math Center and the Writing Center. Mount students also develop and strengthen their leadership and collaboration skills while participating in the more than 40 clubs and organizations, as well as 20 NCAA Division III sports teams.
