Salisbury University
Nationally recognized for excellence, Salisbury University (SU) has a creative curriculum emphasizing undergraduate research, study abroad, internships and civic engagement. Offering 55 graduate and undergraduate programs, all four of its schools are endowed a rarity among public institutions nationwide. Exceptional students, a highly regarded faculty and dynamic administration have earned SU recognition as a Maryland campus on the move.
National Rankings
There are many reasons for the increasing interest in the campus. For the ninth consecutive year, SU is one of The 366 Best Colleges by The Princeton Review and one of Newsweek Kaplan's "372 Most Interesting Schools." For the 11th consecutive year, SU is one of U.S. News & World Report's Top Public Universities—Master's category (North), the highest-placing public Master's-level university in Maryland. Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine has also named SU one of its Top 100 Best Values in Public Colleges.
Engaged Students
Coming from across the United States and 48 foreign countries, SU's 7,500 students are active citizens. Through the Center for Conflict Resolution's "One Person Can Make a Difference" lecture series, many learned from such luminaries as Nobel Prize winners Lech Walesa and F.W. de Klerk, former presidents of Poland and South Africa respectively. Other students gain global experience abroad. For example, business majors study economics in China and France, education students teach elementary children in New Zealand and nursing students provide aid in Africa.
On the national scene, SU is the only university in Maryland to host some 2,800 of the country's top scholars for the 22nd National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR). On the playing field, Sea Gull athletics teams have earned 12 NCAA Division III national championships since 1994.
Great Teaching
Among SU's 340 full-time faculty are distinguished Fulbright Scholars and winners of the University System of Maryland's Regents Award for Teaching Excellence. Education faculty Dr. Ernie Bond is Maryland Professor of the Year for the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and CASE.
Some of SU's unique programs include Humanities Seminars for alumni and the community on topics from spirituality to J.D. Salinger, and the annual Bernstein Achievement Award for Excellence, which provides student entrepreneurs a top prize of $5,000 for startup costs. The Bellavance Honors Program also offers small discussion-oriented classes that explore wilderness in literature and diversity in musical theatre, among other subjects.
SU has the highest four-, five- and six-year graduation rates of all comprehensive institutions in the University System of Maryland. The most popular majors are business administration, communication arts, biology, elementary education and nursing. The student to faculty ratio is 16:1.
Vibrant Community
SU's learning community extends beyond campus with its annual Fun Day family festival. Through Healthy U, SU helps Delmarva residents lead improved lives. In addition, SU's Relay For Life is consistently one of the nation's top collegiate Relays, raising more than $100,000 last year alone for the American Cancer Society.
The University is home to two National Public Radio affiliates: WSCL 89.5 FM and WSDL 90.7 FM. It's new, state-of-the-art 165,000 square-foot Teacher Education and Technology Center has been lauded as a showcase building for education in the mid-Atlantic. For visitors, the Nabb Research Center for Delmarva History and Culture is a treasure trove of information, while SU's Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art was named one of the "10 Great Places to See American Folk Art" by USA Today.
Successful Outcomes
Successful SU alumni include Baltimore Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti, Perdue Farms CEO Jim Perdue, Weather Channel meteorologist Mike Seidel, television writer Erica Messer (Criminal Minds) and Broadway actress Jennifer Wills (Phantom of the Opera). With more than 35,000 alumni throughout the United States, SU is making its mark as a Maryland University of National Distinction.
