Apprenticeship Programs in Maryland

Local 100 Vital Statistics:

JURISDICTION: Washington, D.C., the entire States of Maryland and Virginia, and 7 counties of West Virginia.

MANPOWER CAPABILITIES: 1700 building trades journeymen and 350 building trades apprentices active in Local 100 + 58,000 building trades journeymen active in 80 local unions throughout the United States.

TYPES OF WORK: Heating, ventilating, air conditioning (HVAC), air and water balancing, sheet metal roofing, architectural sheet metal, specialty sheet metal fabrication, industrial, service work, welding, and indoor air quality and energy management.

Apprentice and Journeyman Training Programs:

State certified apprentice training programs (4-year program)

  • 720 hours of classroom instruction
  • 8000 hours of on-the-job training
  • Drug testing mandatory for acceptance into apprentice program

Advanced journeyman training programs:

  • Specification and blueprint reading
  • Sketching and drafting
  • CAD (computer aided drafting)
  • Welding (American Welding Society certified testing center)
  • Testing and balancing of air systems
  • HVAC service work

Local 100 maintains training centers in each of their area offices for the purpose of training apprentices to become journeymen sheet metal workers and for the purpose of specialized training for our current journeymen members.

Applicant Eligibility:

  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Four years apprenticeship program
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D preferred
  • Must be physically fit to perform the work of the sheet metal trade
  • Must be able to pass a drug test prior to acceptance into the program
  • Tests consist of Math and Spatial Relationships (matching up different shapes)
  • Must have a current application on file in order to take tests - Test Day usually last Friday of the month – test times 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m. – Picture I.D. required to take the test-arrive 15-30 minutes before test time.
  • Sample tests available for pick up only between the hours of 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
  • Applicants must have reliable transportation
