School of Nursing

Graduates of The Western Pennsylvania Hospital's School of Nursing have the solid academic foundation and clinical experience they need to meet the challenges of a career in professional nursing.  They are excellently prepared to provide the highest level of care in today's healthcare environment and to use their skills and knowledge for a lifetime of learning and career advancement.

The School of Nursing, founded in 1892, offers the following:

  • Full accreditation by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC)

  • 22-month program for the Diploma in Nursing

  • Articulation on-site with Clarion University of Pennsylvania for college courses required for the Diploma and options for concurrent Associate of Science Degree in Allied Health and/or continuation for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree

  • Committed, caring, skilled faculty

  • Financial aid on-site

  • Daycare on-site

  • Only Pittsburgh diploma nursing program with on-site housing

Clinical Settings

The Western Pennsylvania Hospital is the primary clinical setting for the School of Nursing.  This 500-bed teaching hospital and regional referral center is a part of the West Penn Allegheny Health System.

The Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh was recognized in 2006 as a Magnet hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.  West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh is the first and only hospital in Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania to receive this prestigious 4-year designation, which recognizes excellence in nursing and quality patient care.

The Western Pennsylvania Hospital also serves as a clinical campus for Temple University School of Medicine and for schools of respiratory therapy and radiologic technology, and sponsors numerous graduate medical education (residency/fellowship) programs.

With state-of-the-art facilities, pioneering technology, and exceptional medical and nursing staffs, the Hospital provides comprehensive care to patients with the range of medical and surgical specialties.  School of Nursing students complete their medical-surgical, obstetrics, neonatal intensive care, and burn care rotations at the Hospital.  Other rotations are held in specialty facilities and community settings.

Academic Resources

Faculty of West Penn Hospital's School of Nursing update the curriculum to include breakthroughs in nursing as they happen and work closely with students to provide the best possible learning opportunities.

The School's classrooms and administrative and faculty offices are located in the School of Nursing, adjacent to West Penn Hospital.

The Richard M. Johnston Health Sciences Library located in the Hospital offers the latest technology for accessing on-line information.

The Western Pennsylvania Hospital's STAR Center, featuring sophisticated, computer-based patient mannequins, is housed on the first floor of the School of Nursing building.  One of only 54 in the nation, West Penn's gold-standard simulation facility allows students and clinicians to practice a wide range of patient care techniques and to test their proficiency in managing a variety of critical clinical situations.

University Affiliation

The required general education courses for School of Nursing students are taught by Clarion University faculty in classrooms located in the West Penn facility.

Many students of the School of Nursing are eligible to receive an Associate of Science Degree in Allied Health from Clarion concurrent with their Diploma from the West Penn Hospital School of Nursing.

Student Services

School of Nursing faculty are committed to helping students achieve their personal potentials for success.  Each student's faculty advisor works with the student on an individual basis.  Several faculty members have additional expertise in helping students who experience particular challenges in achieving their goal of becoming a nurse.

Admission Requirements, Tuition, and Financial Aid

Acceptance into the School of Nursing is based on academic, personal, and health requirements.  Academic requirements include:

  • graduation from an approved high school, preferably in the top two-fifths of the class, or a General Equivalency Diploma (GED), with 4 units in English, 2 units in science (one course must be chemistry with a grade of "C" or better; both courses must include a laboratory), 3 units in social studies, 2 units in mathematics (one course must be algebra with a grade of "C" or better), and 5 units in electives (preferably academic courses) and
  • minimum SAT scores of 800 Total with 350+ Verbal and 350+ Math (before April 1, 1995) or 920 Total with 430+ Verbal and 400+ Math (after April 1, 1995).

Tuition and fees for The Western Pennsylvania Hospital School of Nursing are reasonable and the School's Financial Aid Officer is committed to helping students and their families explore all available forms of assistance to offset the costs of education.
