Walsh University

Walsh University has been dedicated to first generation college-students since its founding by The Brothers of Christian Instruction nearly 50 years ago. Walsh promises in its mission to "deliver a values-based education to all who seek it." Of its nearly 2,500 students across more than 50 majors and all degree programs, 45 percent are first generation. The University has created a First Year Institute program that fosters development and assists all incoming freshman as they begin their college experience.  An important outcome of that initiative is the support provided to young people and their families not familiar with college culture.

Located on 140 tranquil acres, Walsh University has been experiencing phenomenal growth – both academically and physically – with the launch of a new doctoral-level degree, a number of expanding programs and many new state-of-the-art classrooms, labs, athletic facilities and residence halls.

With the addition of a new Doctor of Physical Therapy degree, Walsh is prepared to provide a sound educational background that will better equip graduates to enter clinical practice. The doctoral program will meet industry demands by preparing physical therapists who understand and utilize evidence-based practice, are highly competent in patient care and poised to become educators themselves.

Supporting the programmatical advances in Walsh's Physical Therapy program is a state-of-the-art cadaver laboratory, designed exclusively for anatomical study. The laboratory allows students hands-on experience in dissecting and understanding the relationships, aging and illnesses involved in human tissue, muscle and bone.  The physical therapy program also houses a state-of-the-art motor function laboratory for advanced research.

Walsh is one of only a small number of universities to offer a Bioinformatics program. This exciting new field integrates mathematics, biological research and chemical principles with powerful computing technology to create applications in virtually any discipline, especially in complex health related fields. The program is supported by a leading-edge technology Bioinformatics laboratory, rated one of the best in the United States.

Walsh's leading Nursing program continues to grow, as students now have access to a new state-of-the-art lab that will double the University's "real-world" experience for training and practice. In addition to traditional hospital beds and equipment that allow students to practice basic nursing skills before entering clinical environment, the newest lab will also feature an ICU room and a private practice room for one-on-one study and instruction. A virtual reality room is equipped with high-tech learning aids that include interactive mannequins and a "practiceable" IV arm, and the facility boasts a 15 workstation computer study area.

Other academic programs at Walsh are flourishing, too. The Education Division recently received national acclaim when the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) recognized Walsh's Middle Childhood Education Program as an example for other universities to follow. And, Walsh's Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences has received accreditation for its Mental Health Counseling (M.A. degree) and School Counseling (M.A. degree) programs. "These accomplishments point to both the dedication of our instructors and the top-rate programs which we deliver here at Walsh University," said Dr. Laurence Bove, Provost, Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of College.

The University's International Learning program has been revamped, as Walsh's Rome campus welcomed its first students recently. "The Rome Experience" gives participating students the opportunity to understand Rome's impact on our past and its role in today's global economy during this full-time program. Students study and visit many of Rome's greatest cultural and current locales while staying in the shadow of the Pope's summer home - Castel Gandolfo.

Service-oriented trips to El Salvador and Uganda are also available. Students broaden their outlook on developing countries and contribute to a community in need while spending two weeks at one of Walsh's third-world International Learning Sites for a true service learning experience.

Walsh continues to excel in athletics, with a number of teams competing at National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) championships this past year. The men's basketball team competed in the NAIA "Sweet 16", football team went to the national playoffs, volleyball team became the American Mideast Conference (AMC) Regular Season Champions, men's and women's tennis were AMC champions and the baseball team competed in the college world series.

To support this winning tradition, the University continues to expand its athletic complex. A six-court tennis facility, eight-lane accelerator surface track and an all-purpose, artificial turf practice field have all been added in 2007. And, the University now boasts a state-of-the-art Health and Wellness Complex. The centerpiece of the modernized facility is the Mercy Wellness Center which hosts equipment for all exercise needs, including elliptical machines, treadmills, stationary bikes, weight-resistant machines, free weights and stretching and aerobics areas.

For Fall 2007, Walsh opened a new residence hall to accommodate the University's record-setting enrollment. Called Towers II, the facility features rooms and suites with private bathrooms and showers, microwave and refrigerator. This new hall is also home to a 67-seat movie theater, computer lab, laundry facility, convenience store and fitness facility.

Walsh University is within minutes of more than 100 restaurants, shopping, recreational and entertainment options. For more information about Walsh University, visit www.walsh.edu, or call 800.362.9846.
