Chatham College
Prepares World Ready Women ®
Chatham
College, founded in 1869, is one of the oldest women’s colleges
in the United States, with an educational foundation built upon
women’s leadership, global understanding and environmental
awareness. The college’s history of preparing World Ready
Women® is visible through the impact Chatham women have as teachers,
professionals, and civic leaders. Corporate CEOs, U.S. judges, and
the founder of the modern environmental movement all call Chatham
College their alma mater*.
A quiet setting in a college city
Designated a national arboretum, the 32-acre campus is located in
a safe and beautiful neighborhood just minutes from downtown Pittsburgh,
arts and entertainment venues, hiking/biking trails and many other
attractions. Pittsburgh is also home to eight other institutions
of higher learning with a total student population of over 100,000,
with the two largest schools – Carnegie Mellon University
and the University of Pittsburgh – within walking distance.
What’s the difference?
Chatham College makes a difference in the lives of its students.
Leadership, environmental, and international perspectives all play
a part in a Chatham education. The college offers degrees in over
35 undergraduate majors and twelve coeducational graduate programs,
as well as continuing education programs. Students also have the
opportunity to earn both their bachelor’s and master’s
degrees in as little as five years through the college’s Accelerated
Masters Program, in disciplines including Biology, Business, Interior
Architecture, Teaching, and Writing.
Chatham’s educational distinctions include the Chatham Abroad program for all sophomores – a multi-week travel experience with classmates and faculty during the sophomore year. Students have traveled to destinations such as Haiti, Belize, Morocco, Egypt, Norway and Eastern Europe. The Chatham College Global Focus Program focuses on one country or region of the world each year to study and incorporate in special programs, courses and cultural events. Chatham also offers extensive service opportunities both at home and abroad, and the Senior Tutorial project, which each student works one-on-one with a faculty mentor.
The Centers of Excellence are open to all students on campus. The Center for Women in Politics in Pennsylvania at Chatham College is the first organization in the state to focus specifically on women's political participation. The Rachel Carson Institute of Chatham College was established in 1989 to further the ideals and spirit of environmental pioneer and Chatham alumna Rachel Carson, Chatham Class of 1929, author of Silent Spring and the founder of the modern environmental movement.
