Stenotech Career Institute
Court Reporter Training Programs in New Jersey

Become a REALTIME COURT REPORTER

As a StenoTech student, you are entering an exciting field where you can plan your work around your life, not your life around your work.  Freelance reporters—who earn an average of $60,000 per year--have the freedom to choose when to work and when to play.  Earning potential is at a maximum with salaries of hard-working real-time reporters passing the $100,000 per year mark.

So what's the catch?

The only possible snag is your determination.

The ideal StenoTech student meets deadlines, handles pressure well, and can concentrate for long periods of time.  You should be intelligent; able to handle the academic rigors of a post-secondary education; computer-literate and possessing an above-average understanding of the English language.

The most important aspect of our program is the work you will do on the stenotype machine.  The machine is with you from day one, when you are introduced to theory, until your graduation day, when you are blazing away at 225 words per minute.  As one student has said, "You learn to hear with your hands."  Once you have grasped the theory and completed your academic courses, your time will be focused on attaining that 225 wpm level.  You should expect to practice at least two hours every night, after a day of taking depositions in two- and three-voice series.  Like learning to play the piano, learning to hear with your hands does not happen over night.  But there is hope.  We have had several students complete the program, which generally takes two and a half years, in just 18 months.

Our mission at StenoTech Career Institute is to cultivate the finest information reporters in the industry – a mission that has been reflected by a graduate placement rate of nearly 95 percent since our opening in 1989.  You can attend day or night, full-time or part-time. You progress through the programs at your own pace and you can even "earn as you learn" by using your new skills to do entry-level work in the field while attending school.

For those students looking to jump into the working world as soon as possible, we offer several shorter programs.  Court reporter Scoping is a viable career alternative to Court reporting and the program can be completed in about nine months.  Students in our full-time court-reporting program often begin working as scopists prior to graduating.  Full-time scopists earn an average annual salary of $30- 40,000 while enjoying the convenience of working from home.  Programs in Medical Transcription and Medical Text Entry are also available and can be completed in nine to eighteen months, respectively.

So take the time to learn more about the programs here at StenoTech.  The hard work pays off:  The industry boasts of a 0% unemployment rate, allowing reporters the flexibility to work as often or as little as they like.  This is a career that will grow with you, travel with you, and, most importantly, satisfy you.  If you enjoy a challenge and the elation of success it brings, a reporting career is for you.
